I agree with you in one way about prospective amoms needing to see the pain, but it's a catch 22 because that can also be kind of coercive (unintended of course) in the sense that the expectant mom may feel that at that point since the amom is there, she has an obligation to not hurt them, and to place her child with them, no matter what she might be feeling and how she may have changed after giving birth.
